Helldivers 2<\/a> has been a huge hit for developer Arrowhead and publisher Sony, but don’t expect a third game in the series anytime soon.<\/p>\n

Arrowhead’s chief creative officer, Johan Pilestedt, told Rock Paper Shotgun<\/a> that a sequel would reset “everything” and force the player to “start over.” He doesn’t want to ask the community to do that, so Arrowhead will instead keep the momentum going with the existing game by offering new content.<\/p>\n

“Some studios can treat players like a short-term cash grab,” Pilestedt said. “We see players as the actual engine of the game: they’re the ones bringing in friends, making memes, and keeping the game alive. When you have an active community doing that, you don\u2019t need a sequel.”<\/p>\n

He went on to say that the video game industry today is “panicking” because “the old live-service tricks don’t work anymore,” and that would also apply to a hypothetical Helldivers 3. If Arrowhead were to make a sequel, it would need to be highly differentiated, he said.<\/p>\n

“The biggest competitor to a Helldivers 3 would be Helldivers 2. It only makes sense to make a distinct sequel if it\u2019s so different that both games can exist side by side. For now, making Helldivers 2 better every day makes way more sense than throwing away its momentum,” he said.<\/p>\n

Pilestedt added that 95% of the studio is working on Helldivers 2 right now, with only a small team assigned to work on whatever the team is making next<\/a>. <\/p>\n

While there won’t be a third Helldivers game anytime soon, if ever, a Helldivers movie is now in the works. The very large man Alan Ritchson<\/a> is replacing the very large Aqua(man) Jason Momoa as the film’s lead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
